West Elm Plans First Bay Area Hotel

Brooklyn, NY-based West Elm plans to open its first Bay Area hotel in Oakland’s Uptown neighborhood. The proposed $90-million West Elm Hotel includes a 150-rooms, 70 adjacent apartments and 15,000 square feet of ground-floor retail.

The project, which could start construction next year, is expected to open in 2020. The “Auto Row site at 2401 Broadway is owned by the Kwei family, and currently houses a vacant auto repair building and a surface parking lot.

Signature Development Group and Jordan Real Estate Investments will develop the hotel. The mixed-use hotel development will blend a historic facade preserved from a 1910s Beaux Arts structure, and is adjacent to Signature’s Hive mixed-use project.

Signature Development’s Michael Ghielmetti says, “West Elm was a natural fit for our first hospitality venture, because they share our commitment to fostering community and have executed it brilliantly in the retail arena.”
