Weslaco to Expand its Foreign Trade Zone

Weslaco, in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley, has signaled its willingness to grow its foreign trade zone (FTZ) into a regional one. The city is partnering with Donna, Pharr and Edinburg, TX to expand, and all the municipalities have signed on for the project. According to Weslaco City Manager Mike Perez, the next step is to submit the paperwork to the Foreign Trade Zone board, located in Washington DC.

Two FTZs currently exist in Hidalgo County; the smaller one in Weslaco, and a larger one in McAllen, TX. “We are not competing with McAllen,” Perez told the Rio Grande Guardian. “We are just offering an alternate. You can go to A or B, and pick what you want.”

FTZs allows for the import of products without a tariff.
