Washington State Aims to Set Deadline for Electric Cars
Washington State is making a commitment to follow California’s stringent vehicle emissions standards, according to Washington’s $17 billion transportation plan. State officials aim for there to be only new electric cars in Washington by 2030.
The new measure is known as Clean Cars 2030, according to Coltura, a nonprofit environmental advocacy group.
“The war in Ukraine and the burden of high gas prices on families demonstrate the importance of ending our dependence on gasoline and preparing for an all-electric transportation future,” Matthew Metz, co-executive director of Coltura, said, according to the organization’s website.
Around 55 percent of voters nationwide are in favor of using electric cars and eliminating gas-powered cars beginning in 2030, according to a study by Coltura in cooperation with George Mason University, Yale University and Climate Nexus. Coltura has been making strides to advance the Clean Cars initiative since 2017.
