Washington and Oregon Close Restaurants & Bars

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee ordered all restaurants, bars, entertainment and recreational facilities to temporarily shut down on Monday in an effort to stop the spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Later in the day, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown also acted to limit restaurants and bars to takeout or delivery service only for at least four weeks starting March 17th.

Grocery stores and pharmacies were excluded from the bans in both states. Restaurants in Washington are also allowed to provide takeout and delivery.

Gov. Inslee said, “These are very difficult decisions, but hours count here and very strong measures are necessary to slow the spread of the disease. I know there will be significant economic impacts to all our communities, and we are looking at steps to help address those challenges.”

Gov. Brown also ordered statewide cancellation of all events and gatherings of 25 or more in Oregon. She said, “The actions we take today will save lives.”

The COVID-19 outbreak has killed more than 40 people in Washington state and has been declared a pandemic by world health officials. So far, only one death has been reported in Oregon.
