Walmart Taps Employees for Last-Mile Delivery Program
Walmart employees at two stores in New Jersey and one in Arkansas are being used as delivery drivers. Workers in the “associate delivery” test program drop off online orders when returning home after their regular work shift.
Walmart could utilize a vast network of 4,700 U.S. stores and roughly 1.2 million employees to speed delivery and cut costs. The giant retailer says workers can choose to participate and would be paid.
Employees who opt-in to participate will use an application to set how many packages they’d deliver, as well as the weight and size. Walmart hasn’t said how workers would be paid, but indicated it would comply with all federal and state minimum wage and overtime laws.
Walmart is seeking ways to counter Amazon’s online dominance. Other measures include online shoppers electing to pick up items at stores, in exchange for lower prices.
