Walmart Spending $135M at Port of Mobile
Walmart Stores Inc. announced it plans to build a $135 million distribution center at the Port of Mobile. The 2.5-million-square-foot facility is the company’s fourth distribution center in Alabama, and is expected to take 14 months for build-out. Upon completion, the facility will support approximately 800 Walmart locations, and will create 550 full-time jobs.
The center is expected to boost local port traffic by 10%. It is also the first development to qualify for a new port credit put in place in 2016 by the Alabama legislature.
“Walmart’s distribution and logistics center in Mobile County will enhance Alabama’s connection to the global economy, and provide a major boost in cargo volume to the Port of Mobile,” said Greg Canfield, with the Alabama Department of Commerce. “The Walmart hub will act as a powerful catalyst for job creation, and significantly increase the Port of Mobile operations.”
