Walmart Moves on from Redlands; 33 Acres for Sale
A planning and entitlement saga that began in 2005 has culminated, not in a grand opening of a new Walmart Supercenter, but in a decision by the retailer to vacate its pursuit of entitlements with a decision to sell its 33-acre development site at the southeast corner of San Bernardino Avenue and Tennessee Street in Redlands, CA.
Despite lawsuits and challenges, Walmart had secured one-year extensions for its conditional use permits and parcel map annually, with the last extension for the project signed off on in April 2019.
While dramatic changes to the retail landscape most likely played a role in the decision, market sources indicated the regulatory obstacles in Redlands and the long-term delays between the time of proposal were the definitive motivators to end the project. Walmart’s plans for supercenters in Fontana and other cities are also currently on hold.
