Walmart Eyeing Jarrell for Next Super Store

Walmart is planning to construct a 170,000 square-foot store at Hugh Smith Land and FB Schwertner Road in Jarrell. The Austin Business Journal reports that it would be the first major grocer for the city, which currently has a Brookshire Brothers and Jarrell Supermarket. Kimley-Horn is the project engineer.

At a recent Jarrell City Council meeting, the town voted to annex a half-acre parcel, a crucial component in securing Walmart’s agreement to the deal.

The project is expected to cost $70 million to build and employ 300 workers. Texas has 593 locations, which is about 11% of all Walmart locations in the US. The Texas workforce is 173,000 people.

Jarrell, located in the northern reaches of the Austin metro, is experiencing rapid population growth, with an estimated population of 3,980, up from 1,753 in 2020.
