Walmart Enters Netflix and Amazon Video Space
Cord-cutters have extra incentive to tap into Walmart’s Vudu video streaming service now. The giant retailer launched a free streaming service called Vudu Movies on Us, aimed at today’s audience, keenly more interested in streaming rather than owning.
The move follows Amazon’s launch of Prime Video, a perk of Amazon Prime membership, that offers commercial-free movies and TV shows. Walmart’s free streaming service differs in that it won’t offer new releases. The company plans to focus on blockbuster titles and other classics.
Vudu Movies on Us will be ad-supported. It will compete with the likes of Yahoo View and Sony’s Crackle.
The new venture allows Walmart to enter the on-demand streaming space at a lower barrier to entry. Building an exclusive content library would have been costly, even for Walmart.
