Walgreens Will Phase Out Company-Operated Clinics

Walgreens said this week it would close its company-operated in-store health clinics by the end of this year, while continuing with those that are run in partnership with local health system partners.

The Deerfield, IL-based pharmacy chain will phase out approximately 150  “loss-making” clinics and continue with 200-plus clinics on which it has partners, co-CEO Alex Gourlay said on an earnings call.

The planned closing of the Walgreens-operated clinics doesn’t mean the company is souring on the in-store health services model, though. “We’ve recently signed a new agreement with Jenny Craig, a health and weight loss management company, to open centers in around 100 Walgreens locations by early 2020,” Gourlay said.

Further, Gourlay said, “We’re aiming to open at least 600 LabCorp patient centers across the U.S. providing diagnostic lab testing in the community. We opened 21 centers in the fourth quarter, taking the total to 58.”
