Walgreens Signs on as First Tenant for Old Post Office
Walgreens is magnifying its presence in Chicago, the city where it was founded. The drugstore giant has indicated it would become the first tenant at 601W Companies’ redeveloped Old Post Office Building, committing to about 200,000 square feet there.
When Walgreens’ downtown offices open in the fall of 2019, they’ll house about 1,800 employees, including 1,300 relocated from the company’s offices in suburban Deerfield, IL. However, the Deerfield space will remain the company’s headquarters, with 3,200 corporate employees.
Drawing on Chicago’s wealth of tech talent, the Old Post Office space will mainly house digital and IT employees. The company’s digital office, now at the Sullivan Center, will move to the new location.
“The space in the iconic Old Post Office building allows us to attract and retain the best talent from all of Chicagoland,” said Walgreens president Alex Gourlay.
