Waldorf School Taking Over Historic Building
The former Lyman Trumbull Elementary School at 5200 N. Ashland Ave., vacant since 2013, will resume its role as an educational facility when the Chicago Waldorf School moves in this fall.
The Trumbull building, designed by architect Dwight H. Perkins in 1909, had been slated for adaptive reuse into 49 apartments and a stage for TimeLine Theatre Company. But that use might have been ineligible for historic preservation tax credits, and the potential developers walked away. The site will likely be rezoned back to educational use.
The private, K-12 Waldorf School plans to move to the Andersonville neighborhood from its current Rogers Park location (1300 W. Loyola Ave.) by the beginning of the 2018-19 school year. The school will rehab the property this summer, and seek landmark protection for the 109-year-old structure.
