Just in time for a condominium conversion already underway, the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in Manhattan is now a protected landmark — inside and out.

The hotel’s exterior received landmark status in 1993. The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission recently voted unanimously to also protect its most lavish public spaces, including interconnected rooms and corridors on the first three floors.

“The Waldorf Astoria Hotel has some of the most internationally renowned rooms in all of New York City,” said Meenakshi Srinivasan, chair of the Commission.

Designed by Schultze and Weaver, the hotel opened in September 1931. The protected spaces include the lofty Park Avenue Lobby with its 13 murals, and the wood-paneled Main Lobby. Also under protection are the property’s mirrored halls, elevators and staircases.

Anbang, which bought the hotel in 2014, closed it to begin converting its hotel rooms to condominiums. Anbang said it fully supports the new landmark designation.
