Wal-Mart is Saving “Ugly” Fruit
Last week, we shared an article about how half of the food production in the U.S. is wasted. In an effort to reduce waste, Wal-Mart, America’s largest grocer, has agreed to sell the “ugly fruit” that gets trashed, even though it’s edible.
The retailer is going to sell apples that are weather-dented at a discounted price in 300 of its Florida stores. Washington state’s apples, ironically named “I’m Perfect”, can be found in two and five-pound bags at the Florida locations.
According to Columbia Marketing International, apple losses due to blemishes can reach as high as 30 percent. With Wal-Mart owning 4,000 stores across the nation, this big move could completely change the game and salvage much of the nation’s wasted produce.
