W. Palm Beach OK’s Shipping Container Housing Project
Discarded shipping containers are being used for more than makeshift border walls. West Palm Beach approved an affordable housing project where units are created out of the steel carcasses of one-time train and truck containers.
The Palm Beach County Housing Authority expects to get a demolition permit and begin knocking down a building that stands at the site sometime in December. The project is at 45th Street near the Ballpark of the Palm Beaches.
The project will consist of 48 one- and two-bedroom units made from steel shipping containers in a construction project that is cost-effective. The containers will be cleaned up and windows will be inserted.
The apartments are for those who make between $45,000 and $72,000 a year, but too much for low-incoming housing and not enough to afford most rents in the Palm Beach County market.
