Vista Tower Tops Out; Chicago’s Tallest New Building Since 2008
Chicago construction literally reached its highest point in more than a decade this past Friday, when workers topped out the 1,191-foot-tall Vista Tower. Being developed by Magellan Development Group and Dalian Wanda Group, the 101-story residential project is the city’s tallest new construction since Trump International Hotel & Tower reached its full height in August 2008.
Slated for completion in spring 2020, Vista Tower will be the third-tallest skyscraper in Chicago after the Trump tower and Willis Tower, completed in 1974.
For 24 years after its completion, Willis Tower—originally Sears Tower—was the world’s tallest building. The Chicago Tribune reported that it has since been surpassed by 16 other skyscrapers; only One World Trade Center in Manhattan is in the U.S.
Construction began on the $1-billion Vista Tower in September 2016. Like the Trump project, it will combine condominium residences with a five-star hotel.
