Vacaville Unveils Plans for 300-Acre Biotech Development
The City of Vacaville plans to develop California Biomanufacturing Center, a 300-acre biomanufacturing cluster. The city expects that this expansion will lead to more than $2 billion in industrial development, 3.5 million square feet of commercial real estate, and the addition of 10,000 jobs with a payroll of more than $1 billion a year. The expanded cluster will be built on a site that’s adjacent to existing facilities.
Vacaville Mayor Ron Rowlett says, “Vacaville has the land, infrastructure, and workforce that the biotechnology industry needs to grow, as well as a long-standing commitment to make doing so a streamlined and efficient process.”
The city also created the California Biomanufacturing Center, Inc., a nonprofit that will accelerate the growth of the sector in Vacaville by working with industry and academic partners. A center for biomanufacturing since the 1980s, Vacaville gained recognition as a world-class biotechnology center in 1994, when Genentech acquired land for its biologics manufacturing facility, which is among the largest biotech drug manufacturing complexes in the world.
