UT Dallas Building $13M Esports Center
Playing computer sports games is no longer a superfluous activity. A number of colleges are offering scholarships in esports, and one, the University of Texas at Dallas is spending $13 million to convert an existing building into an esports center. UT Dallas said the new space will feature an open gaming lounge, a multipurpose gaming area, broadcast and production space, and a new eatery.
The center will span 17,384 square feet across two stories. Construction is expected to wrap up in December. Demolition of the current structures is expected to begin in January or early February.
UT Dallas added an esports team to its athletic department in 2018 as competitive, organized video gaming was quickly turning into one of the fastest growing entertainment events in the world.
UT Dallas maintains varsity esports teams in Overwatch, League of Legends, Rocket League, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. All varsity players are considered student-athletes and receive athletic benefits from the school, including an athletic scholarship, a jersey and uniform, and priority class registration.
