USAA Rolls Out App to Reward Safe Driving

Behavior-based app SafePilot data shows that drivers are back on the roads as pandemic restrictions lift and people are increasingly comfortable with travel. Average daily mileage from April to June 2021 was more than 80 percent higher than the previous quarter (January to March 2021) and average monthly miles driven and average trip length are both 10 percent higher than pre-pandemic.

Road behaviors have shifted as well. As of August 2021, driving data showed a 10 percent increase in speeding when compared to one year ago. The same time period yielded a 15 percent decrease in active phone handling, likely a result of more cars being on the road and less opportunity for distraction.

These shifts in driving behaviors alongside the financial impacts of COVID-19 have caused many to seek out money-saving programs including SafePilot from USAA which has launched in 34 states. The SafePilot app instructs and rewards safe driving habits while lowering insurance premiums.

SafePilot has plans to roll out even more broadly in the rest of the year. Daily driver enrollment year-to-date is 203 percent higher than in 2020, and policy growth year-over-year is 75 percent, with half of new policyholders opting into the program.

USAA also recently announced it plans to acquire insurtech company Noblr Inc. to offer usage-based insurance to its members.
