UPS Opens Worldport Facilities for FEMA Use in COVID-19 Fight
Atlanta-based United Parcel Service Inc. is coordinating with the president’s Coronavirus Taskforce, FEMA and state health agencies to provide supply chain services for nationwide distribution of PPE, respirators, N95 masks, and gloves for use by healthcare workers. UPS’s Worldport facilities in Louisville, KY will be available for FEMA to use as a temporary staging of critical shipments from overseas.
“UPS’s dedicated people, global network and public-private partnerships are creating a powerful combination for rapid deployment of protective equipment and test kits throughout the U.S., and around the world,” said UPS Chairman and CEO, David Abney. “UPS Healthcare has the expertise and experience to move vital, life-saving medicines, medical devices, diagnostic specimens and supplies everywhere they are needed.”
The “unprecedented” collaboration is a component of the public-private partnership the Trump Administration has called Project Airbridge, as it fights against the coronavirus pandemic.
The shipping giant is also assisting with planning and logistics for coronavirus drive-thru testing operations in the works at various locations across the U.S. UPS is working with several government agencies to transport test kits, PPE, supplies and medical devices, as U.S health agencies in states such as California, Georgia and Kentucky set up testing sites.
