University of Texas at San Antonio to Buy County Jail

Bexar County commissioners okayed the sale of a two-acre parcel holding the Central Texas Detention Facility. The buyer, University of San Antonio, will pay $5.7 million for the property at 218 S. Laredo in downtown San Antonio. As part of the deal, the county will be responsible for demolishing the jail, and preparing the acreage for construction.

Federal detainees in the jail have been moved to other facilities. The county anticipates closing the land transfer by late 2020 or early 2021.

The county-owned parcel is between two other pieces of land that the city already sold to UTSA. The university plans to build its new School of Data Science and National Security Collaboration Center on the property. Meanwhile, the former federal detention center land will hold the university’s college of business extension.
