University Health System Readies for $452M Expansion

University Health System (UHS) is moving ahead with a $452-million plan to expand its South Texas Medical Center campus on San Antonio’s northwest side. UHS selected MarmonMOK|ZGF to design the multiphase project, which will be anchored by the 302-bed Women’s and Children’s Tower at University Hospital.

The first phase will involve building a new heart and vascular center on the first floor inside UHS’ existing Sky Tower. Additional phases will focus on developing a new parking garage and the new hospital addition. The final phase will focus on 179 beds, separate emergency departments for pediatrics and obstetrics-gynecology, and a 24-bassinet nursery. Also on tap will be heart cath labs and shell space for an additional 123 beds.

A project manager will be selected within the next few weeks.
