University Health System Proceeds with $500M Expansion

San Antonio’s University Health System is proceeding with plans to build a 12-story tower at its main campus, located in the South Texas Medical Center. Upon the late 2022 completion of the $500-million expansion, the new tower will hold the healthcare system’s inpatient women’s and children’s medical services, and will offer two emergency departments for OB/GYN patients and children.

In addition, the new hospital will have 268 private patient rooms, larger labor and delivery suites and a child-friendly space with a movie lounge game room and indoor play areas.

UHS announced its intent in August 2017 to spend $390 million on the expansion. The price tag increased, as the tower grew from six to 12 floors. Michael Roussos with UHS told the San Antonio Express News that some of the departments relocating to the tower are currently in a building that is 50 years old. He said the hospital has outgrown the space.
