United Structures of America to Shutter Operations
United Structures of America, a Houston-based design company that designs and builds steel buildings, is shutting down. The company, located at 1912 Buschong St., will cease operations in September 2019, with 73 jobs eliminated. The layoffs will take place in late September.
According to a notice filed with the Texas Workforce Commission (through a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification act letter), United Structures attributed the shutdown to the lingering effects of steel tariffs, financing issues and a recent cyberattack.
According to a recent report from the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, Texas manufacturers have shared concerns about the ongoing tariff war and its impact on production and other costs. In addition, Patrick Jankowski with the Greater Houston Partnership, told the Houston Business Journal that Houston has a tight labor market. Companies have open positions, but not enough skilled workers to fill them.
