Union Station Could See Seven-Story Addition

A seven-story addition to Chicago’s Union Station was among the design elements presented at the redevelopment plan’s first public meeting, hosted by Ald. Brendan Reilly. The $1-billion project’s first phase would also see the station’s upper floors converted into hotel rooms, with 400 apartments in the addition.

Plans from the developers, Riverside Investment & Development and Convexity Properties, also call for the addition of a food hall and other amenities to an active rail station that serves some 37 million Metra and Amtrak passengers per year.

“The idea is to make this an active and animated public space,” said Riverside CEO John O’Donnell. “We want to make this an important destination 12 months a year.”

Amtrak selected the Riverside/Convexity partnership in May 2017 to redevelop the 93-year-old station. If the plan is approved by the city, construction could begin in spring 2019.
