Parking Beneath Houston’s Astrodome Approved
Harris County Commissioners Court in Houston accepted a plan to develop parking beneath the long-vacant Astrodome. If the $105-million plan moves forward, it would be funded by revenues and fees, rather than a property tax increase.
The project would create 1,400 spaces. Just as important, it would create a site for potential development. The commissioners court will start reviewing specific proposals for the parking project in September.
The long-vacant Astrodome was once home to the Houston Astros baseball team. The location remained vacant since the Astros moved to a downtown stadium in 2000. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, a multitude of proposals have been presented over the years in an attempt to rehabilitate the structure.
