UMC El Paso to Build Clinic on Old Hotel Site

University Medical Center of El Paso is planning to make use of a site that currently holds the shuttered Vagabond Inn at 4800 Gateway East Blvd. in El Paso. Specifically, UMC El Paso is planning to put a primary care clinic on the site, and will open emergency rooms in its other neighborhood clinics.

Vagabond Inn, which had previous life as a Motel 6, will be torn down later in 2018 for a 22,000-square-foot outpatient clinic. Construction on the clinic itself is expected to begin by the end of the year. Officials note that the new clinic, which will be half the size of other, similar clinics, will also help alleviate some of the hospital’s overcrowding.

UMC paid about $5.5 million for the property in 2017, and has issued a request for proposals concerning asbestos abatement and demolition of the abandoned 50-year-old building on the site.
