ULI NY Touts Geothermal Energy for Hunts Point Complex
The Urban Land Institute New York (ULI NY) recommended bringing geothermal energy to Hunts Point Food Distribution Center (HPFDC) in the South Bronx. The recommendation stems from a ULI NY study commissioned by New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC).
The measure would provide an annual $6.2-million utility cost savings, and increase HPFDC’s resiliency in the face of future severe weather events and rising sea levels.
“Protecting New York City from the threat of climate change requires big ideas and community-focused planning,” said Winthrop Hoyt, SVP, NYCEDC Asset Management. “ULI NY’s recommendations to explore geothermal energy as an additional renewable energy source amplify NYCEDC’s vision for a resilient campus that could protect HPFDC from the impact of climate change and will help safeguard residents in this South Bronx community.”
Nicknamed “New York City’s Refrigerator,” HPFDC is a network of distribution businesses on the Hunts Point Peninsula in the Bronx that handles 4.5 billion pounds of food flow each year.
