UCSD’s Jacobs Medical Center Cost Approaches $1B

The Jacobs Medical Center, UC San Diego’s specialty hospital, is reportedly 93 percent complete and set to open later this year. Officials say the price tag is quickly approaching $1 billion, as a result of the latest cost escalation that was approved by the UC Board of Regents last week.

This marks the fourth such increase since the 2012 groundbreaking, when the estimated cost for the facility, that’s slated to house three specialty mini-hospitals, was $664 million. Specialized surgical suites, more operating rooms, and an anatomic pathology lab are increasing costs. Officials also admit poor financial forecasting, and a lack of experience with large hospital construction are to blame.

Repeated overruns has resulted in replacing most of the project’s management team, and the hospital’s expected opening day has been pushed from July to October or November.
