UCLA Claims Silver Shovel in NAIOP SoCal’s 2018 Real Estate Challenge
A five-person graduate student team from the Ziman Center of Real Estate at UCLA’s Anderson School of Business (pictured) was awarded the Silver Shovel and $5,000 from NAIOP SoCal during its annual UCLA vs. USC Real Estate Challenge. Teams from the Ziman Center and the Lusk Center at USC’s Marshall School of Business and Price School of Public Policy competed in a head-to-head competition to determine the highest and best use for a unique undeveloped 11-acre parcel in Tustin, CA.
NAIOP SoCal Real Estate Challenge Chair and SVP with PMRG Mark Mattis says, “This is an iconic industry event. It really demonstrates the next generation of thinking in our industry. I am proud of the work done by both teams. It is further testament to the strength of the USC and UCLA programs and their ability to prepare our young real estate professionals.”
The winning UCLA proposal, called Solanna, included two select service hotels, 240 multifamily units and 75 units of affordable housing with 10,000 square feet of supporting retail. A significant placemaking element of the site encompassed a central common-use community space with garden courtyards and an outdoor movie theatre.
