UC Berkeley Launches Construction on 23-Story Student Housing Tower

The University of California at Berkeley has begun construction on a 23-story student housing tower, reported the San Francisco Chronicle. When completed, the $443-million project will reshape the city’s skyline and add more than 1,600 beds as the campus struggles to keep up with surging housing demand.

The Bancroft-Fulton Student Housing project, rising at 2200 Bancroft Way near Durant Avenue, is expected to surpass the 185-foot office tower at 2150 Shattuck Ave., according to UC Berkeley development reports. At 276 feet in height, it will still be shorter than the university’s landmark Sather Tower.

The project is being developed by UC Berkeley Capital Strategies and built by Clark Construction. Amenities will include a two-story dining hall, study lounges on each residential floor, social lounges, laundry rooms and a fitness center. The development will also feature a central courtyard, bicycle storage and roughly 19,500 square feet of open space.

Completion is expected by summer 2028, with students moving in for the 2028-29 academic year.
