U.S. Names Key Negotiator in NAFTA Talks
The Trump administration appointed John Melle to represent the U.S. in an aggressive timetable to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with Canada and Mexico. He is a veteran trade official who played a role in crafting the original agreement in the early 1990s.
Talks are slated to commence next month in Washington, DC. Melle is expected to work out the technical details and potential solutions for a revised trade agreement for senior U.S. officials to review.
President Trump says NAFTA is unfair to the U.S. Officials say it has not kept pace with changing times, and has outdated chapters that don’t reflect modern standards.
Melle, a trade official since the late 1980’s, is viewed as a potential advantage for the U.S., since he brings extensive knowledge and history with the trade deal, as well as a rapport with other countries’ negotiators.
