Austin's The Lady Bird has affordable 279 units for seniors

Two Senior Housing Projects In the Cards for Austin

The new one just opened, and the old one will reopen after an extensive renovation is complete. The new one, The Lady Bird independent living building will consist of 279 units for seniors. Another senior living project on Lady Bird Lake, the now vacant Rebekah Baines Johnson Tower is slated for a $60 million renovation. Once the revamp is done in 2025, the 16 story project will add 224 new units for seniors in Austin. The residents from the older tower have moved into the new tower which cost $75 million to build.

Most of the Lady Bird’s rents are at or below 60% of the median family income in the area. Clarke Heidrick, chairman of the Austin Geriatric Center who is sponsoring the project, said help in the form of federal rental assistance vouchers “permits us to provide long-term affordability for very low income residents at the level you typically don’t see in today’s affordable housing for seniors.”
