Trump to Automakers: Build More Plants

One of U.S. President Donald Trump’s promises on the campaign trail was to create more jobs. Now he’s attempting to make good on that promise by pushing auto manufacturers to increase U.S. production and to boost American employment.

Additionally, “I want new plants to be built here for cars to be sold here!” the President tweeted before a Jan. 24 breakfast meeting with executives from General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co. and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV. The meet is the first time CEOs from the Big Three have met jointly with a U.S. president since July 2011.

Trump has criticized automakers for building cars outside of the U.S., and threatened to impose high tariffs on imported vehicles. Automakers, in the meantime, have been pushing announcements about U.S. production and hires, but emphasize that such moves had been in the works for a while.
