Tropicana to Make Way for A’s Stadium
The iconic Tropicana Las Vegas Resort will close on April 2 to make way for the construction of a baseball stadium for the relocation of the Oakland Athletics. The resort would turn 67 years old the day after it closed.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports the formal closure of the Tropicana will pave the way for the demolition of the casino and hotel over the coming months. Bally’s owns and operates the casino. A spokesman says that following demolition, site prep and approval of formal plans, construction of the Las Vegas A’s stadium will likely begin sometime thereafter.
The land where the casino sits and the property slated for the ballpark is owned by GLPI, Gaming and Leisure Properties Inc. The two partners say the Tropicana will be rebuilt but are not sure how a new resort will sit in proximity to the planned 33,000-seat ballpark.
Before demolition, officials must inventory casino chips, tokens, and cash in machines, count rooms, cages, kiosks, fill cabinets and vaults.
