Trepp Survey Shows “Modestly Optimistic” Outlook on Economy

Trepp’s inaugural survey of its podcast listeners revealed a “modestly optimistic” view of the near-term economic outlook. Nearly 45% of respondents said national economic conditions would present a tailwind by year’s end, well above the 29% who said national economic conditions would present a headwind. However, Trepp says, “the sentiment was far from being universally bullish.”

The outlook on local conditions was less positive. About 39% of respondents were optimistic that local economic conditions would present a tailwind, six points below the national reading, and only 10% above the level of respondents that felt near-term local conditions would represent a headwind.

Regarding CRE fundamentals, “the results hinted at the same tepid recovery,” says Trepp. Only 1% expected fundamentals to strongly improve; 39% expected modest improvement, and 36% expected things to be about the same in the near future. A little over 20% expected fundamentals to retreat.
