Transportation Incentive Program Unveiled in City
Developers are being encouraged to incorporate more alternative-transit options into San Francisco projects. The city’s Board of Supervisors passed an ordinance requiring CRE developers to add non-driving transportation features to projects.
The regulation is based on a points system for each feature added, and is intended to help alleviate traffic congestion. The incentive-based system also applies to residential projects.
Among the options developers can consider are dedicated parking, memberships in car-sharing services, a fleet of bicycles, shuttle service, or on-site childcare.
San Francisco is the first city to utilize a transit-based perks points system. It is being monitored to determine if it works, and can be scaled to other cities.
