Transforming Union Station into an Urban Destination
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is planning a multimillion-dollar restoration of LA’s 77-year-old Union Station. The transformation of the iconic landmark involves creating areas to host concerts, adding retail space and improving the restaurant lineup.
Officials say a dynamic destination matches the rebirth underway in DTLA, and is designed to “bring people back.” Planners envision Union Station emerging as a thriving transit hub, with commercial and cultural attractions, similar to those in New York, Washington, DC or San Francisco’s Ferry Building.
This summer, LiveNation will stage a concert series, and the Hettema Group will install an interactive exhibit showcasing L.A.’s past and future. Next year, a microbrewery and gastropub is slated to occupy the Fred Harvey Room. Future plans also call for the passenger concourse to be remodeled into an open, multi-story commercial area.
