Toys ‘R’ Us Initiates Liquidation Sales at 144 Stores
Liquidation sales commenced Wednesday at Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores as part of the retailers’ bankruptcy restructuring proceedings. The Wayne, NJ-based toy chain, which filed for protection in September and indicated last month it would shutter 175 stores, revised downward the closures to 144.
In addition to merchandise in the stores, store fixtures and furniture are up for grabs at the stores slated to close. Initially, discounts on items will be as much as 30% off.
The company is seeking to climb from beneath a $5-billion mountain of debt. The company indicated it plans to shut down most of the stores in mid-April. As part of the process to gain solid footing, Toys R Us also envisions freshening up a number of existing locations, including co-branding some as Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores.
