Toyota to Expand & Upgrade Manufacturing Plant

Toyota Motor Corp. is planning to spend $17 million on expanding and upgrading its two-million-square-foot plant on San Antonio’s south side. The work will include a 60,000-square-foot addition to the facility, known as Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas. The extra space at 1 Lone Star Pass will be used for car assembly and offices.

Work is scheduled to start in May, and finish in December. Toyota spokesperson Melissa Sparks told the San Antonio Express-News that the expansion is due to a process upgrade to the company’s existing product line, and won’t impact jobs at the plant.

Toyota broke ground on the plant in 2003, rolling out its first Tundra truck from there, three years later. The factory also produces Toyota Tacoma pick-up trucks.
