The Tower Life building will take on a new role. Alamo Architects is tasked with creating a new look for the onetime prominent office building. The new look will include residential apartments. McCombs Enterprises bought the 95-year-old property in 2022, and this summer, crews will begin converting the offices into 244 apartment units.
Built on the eve of the Great Depression, the Gothic Revival building was the tallest in San Antonio until the Tower of the Americas was built in 1968. The first six floors of the building where a Sears store was located have high ceilings and will be turned into urban loft apartments. An amenity floor is planned where the tower sits on top of the main structure. The 7th-floor outdoor space will have a pool and outdoor seating areas. Above that will be smaller, more standard-sized apartments.
The conversion project is expected to last almost two years.
