Tourism Spending in Arizona Down $9B in 2020
Arizona Office of Tourism’s most recent report shows visitors to Arizona spent $8.5 billion through the first eight months of 2020. That number represents a decrease of $9 billion, or 51%, compared to the same period in 2019.
Arizona Office of Tourism’s Debbie Johnson says, “This data paints a bleak, but accurate picture of the importance of tourism to our economy and the steep challenges our industry faces in working toward recovery. This is why we’re so focused on growing consumer confidence and promoting Arizona road trips and staycations.”
A few of the other findings of the report shows the number of jobs supported by travel spending dropped 59% to 79,149 from August 2019, state tax revenue generated by travel spending was down 58% year-over-year and statewide hotel occupancy was down 26%.
Arizona visitors spent nearly $1 billion, or 60%, less in Arizona in August 2020 than they did in August 2019.
