Total Planning $1.7B Expansion of Texas Petrochemical

Petrochemical company Total announced its intent to partner with Borealis and Nova to build an ethane steam cracker and new polyethylene unit near Port Arthur, TX, on the Gulf Coast. The $1.7 billion investment will start up in 2020, and will reportedly create approximately 1,500 jobs during peak engineering and construction activity. CB&I is handling the engineering, procurement and construction contract for the ethane steam cracker.

The new cracker will be built adjacent to Total’s Port Arthur refinery and the Total/BASF existing steam cracker, at 7600 32nd St.

“After significant investments in US LNG and US shale gas in 2016, this almost two-billion-dollar investment signals our determination to strengthen our presence in the United States, where we have operated for 60 years and have more than 6,000 employees,” said Total’s chairman and CEO Patrick Pouyanné. “By joining forces with Borealis and Nova, we aim to create a major player in the US polyethylene market.”
