Tootsie Roll Industries to Expand Cambridge Manufacturing Plant

Confectionery manufacturer Tootsie Roll industries has proposed a 10,000-square-foot addition to its 146,000-square-foot plant near Kendall Square in Cambridge. The factory produces the confections Charleston Chews, Sugar Babies and the entire world’s supply of Junior Mints.

The expansion is needed to replace electrical equipment that is outdated, according to plans filed with the city of Cambridge. The candymaker’s expansion comes at a time when East Cambridge has developed a reputation for the world’s epicenter of life science. The submarket currently boasts a near-zero vacancy rate for office and lab space.

By contrast, the former factory for Squirrel Brand, makers of Squirrel Nut Zippers candy, was recently redeveloped into an affordable housing development. The former Necco factory is now a lab space occupied by Novartis.
