Three Developers Compete for Midway Sports Arena Transformation
The San Diego City Council unanimously selected the three finalists on Monday for the redevelopment of the Midway District sports arena site: Midway Rising, HomeTown SD and Midway Village+.
Affordable housing was front and center for the councilmembers, and all three projects offer a significant amount of units. The Midway Rising proposal, headed by local developer Zephyr, promises 2,000 affordable homes for individuals and families who earn less than 80 percent of the Area Median Income. The HomeTown SD proposal from the Monarch Group, includes 1,726 affordable units and the Midway Village+ package offers 1,610 homes classified as affordable.
All three developers will include a hotel and retail space in the final transformation, as well as a new sports complex and community parks. An outside consultant will now vet the proposals and San Diego’s real estate department expects to have its recommendation by the end of the year.
