The Change in Convenience Stores

Once upon a time, convenience stores (C-stores, for short) were little more than “pit stops.” People would stop at a 7-Eleven or Circle K to gas up, pick up a snack or a drink, and then be on the way. A recent article written by Placer.ai analysts said things are changing.

“Convenience stores are increasingly viewed not only as places to fuel up, but as affordable destinations for quick meals, snacks and other necessities,” the article said. The data supports this assertion. Placer.ai data said monthly convenience store visits have increased (year-over-year) since February 2024. The reason is that many chains are expanding their offerings.

National chains like 7-Eleven are one example. The article said that this brand is taking on the growing role of a “grab-and-go” food and beverage destination. Limited-time offers to boost visits are also helping 7-Eleven stores. One LTO is the store’s annual Slurpee Day, which takes place on July 11. With this event, 7-Elevens offers free Slurpees, leading to increased foot traffic.

At the same time, regional c-stores are expanding into new areas. Wawa and Sheetz (based in Pennsylvania) and Buc-ee’s (headquartered in Texas) are reaching out to establish bases in other states. The article said that Wawa is moving into states like Florida, Georgia and Alabama. Sheetz is looking to open stores in North Carolina and Tennessee, while Buc-ee’s is opening shops in Arkansas and North Carolina.

“This trend toward regional expansion offers significant opportunities for growth, not only by increasing store count but also by reaching new consumer bases and target audiences,” the article pointed out. “Customer behavior differs between markets – and by expanding into new areas, c-stores can tap into unique local visitation patterns.”
