San Antonio-based grocery chain H-E-B is on top of all grocery chains in two categories, so says two recent surveys. A recent JLL survey showed H-E-B in first for building overall new grocery retail space in 2022, adding 1.2 million square feet. The survey also found that H-E-B led the country in foot traffic. H-E-B has 425 stores in Texas and Mexico, with dozens more in the planning stages.

Additionally, Amazon has ceded first place to H-E-B in a new consumer ranking that names the best grocery retailers in the United States. A UK-based research company, Dunnhumby, reported that H-E-B took the top spot at No. 1, while Costco took second place and Amazon landed in the No. 3 spot. According to the survey, the three retailers provide the best combination of customer benefits while minimizing customer costs. It surveyed 10,000 U.S. grocery shoppers.
