Californians moving to Texas

Texas #1 Migration Hotspot

Texas experienced a net influx of more than 46,200 millennials in 2023, making it the top pick in the talent race, according to StorageCafe’s latest migration study, which is based on U.S. Census data. (photo courtesy of Dallas Innovates)

Key findings include:

  • Texas gained over 137,000 more residents than it lost in 2023, fueling a net inflow of over 1 million since 2014, and for the first time in a decade, outpaced Florida as the no. 1 migration hotspot.

  • Unsurprisingly, California sent the most transplants to Texas, with over 97,000 making the move in 2023. California transplants can potentially save an average of 59%.

  • Home prices in eight of the top 10 states sending new residents to Texas are 8% to 59% higher, making homeownership far more attainable. Nearly four in 10 movers achieve homeownership within just a year of relocating.

StorageCafe’s Emilia Man added, “Interstate and regional migration are undergoing significant shifts, driven by the pursuit of affordability and better living conditions. Residents are increasingly relocating to areas with lower housing costs and less competition, often where active construction meets demand, offering diverse housing options for both buyers and renters.”
