Tesla’s Solar Company Seeking Tax Breaks for Fort Bend County Manufacturing Plant
Elon Musk and his companies are pretty busy. Yesterday, SpaceX announced plans for a $16.8 billion chip fabrication plant near the Texas A&M campus. And then today, Tesla’s solar battery company filed for tax breaks from Fort Bend County for a potential $10.1 billion solar cell manufacturing plant.
The factory would be sited near the intersection of FM 1994 and FM 762 not far from Houston.
The Houston Business Journal reports that, in its submittal, the company says the proposed facility would be expected to manufacture photovoltaic solar cells and assemble solar modules, which are components used to convert sunlight into electricity. Operations at the proposed facility would focus on producing finished photovoltaic products for deployment in utility-scale, commercial, and distributed solar installations.
The plant would begin operations in 2029.
The five land parcels it wants for the project would span more than 3,000 acres. The application asks for a 10-year property tax limitation for the site.
