Tempe Developer Converts Famed Surf Park to Business Park
When Big Surf opened in 1969, it was one of the first surf parks with real waves. A developer has caught a real wave of a different kind, the huge increase in industrial development in the Phoenix area. The project is being called “The Next Wave”.
Tempe City Council voted in favor of Overton Moore Properties’ (OMP) new three-building, 690,000-square-foot spec industrial park at 1480 N. McClintock Drive. The company paid $49.97 million for the site in 2022.
With all approvals secured, the Phoenix Business Journal reports construction to start by the end of the year. The architect for the project is HPA Architecture.
Since Big Surf closed, other water attractions have emerged in the Valley including Cactus Surf Park in Gilbert, Cannon Beach in Mesa and VAI Global Development’s $1 billion resort and entertainment complex in Glendale. Both Cannon Beach and VAI are expected to open sometime in 2024.
